Adopting a Bahamian (Dog or Cat) While Visiting?
We here at the Nassau Yacht Haven love animals. It’s always nice to see our guests enjoying the beautiful waters or strolling along the docks with their lucky pets. Among questions we hear frequently are queries about the dogs, and occasional cats, in the streets.
In regards to the dogs, they are referred to as Potcakes. They are an officially recognized breed in the Bahamas by the Bahamas Kennel Club—The Royal Bahamian Potcake. A quick Google search will give you the official specifics. They come in various shapes, colors and sizes, but there is a general model they are based on.
But what we know first-hand is that you will be hard pressed to find a smarter, more loyal dog, than a Potcake. They are truly amazing dogs.
We have been working with some wonderful hardworking folks out at the Bahamas Humane Society to help place dogs needing a home.
Due to customers asking many questions; especially “How hard is it to take a dog home with us?” we can tell you, it’s actually easy!
The Bahamas Humane Society can hold your hand through the entire process and take care of all the paperwork, vet workups and shots your dog will need for a happy, healthy start as well as keep both governments happy. They will help you coordinate it all.
All you have to do is:
1) Pick out your new dog! (Must be 6 months or older if going directly to the US or Canada. If you are southbound, it must be at least that old, with proper vaccinations and valid health certificate, when you head home)
2) Allow 48 hours from start to finish—longer if over a weekend or holiday for all the paperwork, exams, etc.
The Bahamas Humane Society is the oldest animal charity in the Bahamas, being founded in 1924. Due to public pressure, several years ago, it became a “No Kill Shelter” and they are now bursting at the seams with lots of amazing canine companions. All animals are spade or neutered before leaving. The adoption fee is very reasonable at $40.00 and it covers almost everything.
The Nassau Yacht Haven is proud to be covering the adoption fees for specific dogs currently waiting for their future “forever” homes.
We will be featuring several dogs here on our website and social media that really would love to have a chance to get to know you better. We have met most of them personally and they are all worthy of that opportunity. They have already worked their way into our hearts—now we just want to help find them homes.
Cats and kittens are even easier than their canine cousins. Paperwork, vaccines and all can be completed in about 24 hours turnaround time. The fee at this time is nominal.
Pet ownership is a serious responsibility, and we in no way want anyone to undertake an adoption that does not understand the commitment behind it.
But if you have room in your heart and in your home and are looking to add a special animal companion, please consider adopting from the Bahamas Humane Society.
If you want to know more, please ask at the Dockmasters Office and someone will be happy to help you get started! There is so much more to write, but not enough room. So come talk to us so we can tell you more!
We also have a donation jar in the office if you want to help in some way, but aren’t able to commit to actually adopting. A little goes a long way for those committed folks and animals residing at the BHS, and any amount at all helps so very much!
Thank You!
